postheadericon How do I talk to my roommate about her dog?

Question by gratefuluser: How do I talk to my roommate about her dog?
My roommate and I lived together last year, and she has wanted a dog since I’ve known her but hasn’t actually made any serious attempts to get one until this year. In August, we moved into a new apartment where it WAS just the two of us and she started talking about adopting a dog. So, we went to the Humane Society and filled out the paper work….but as it turns out, our landlady won’t allow it in OUR particular unit so the adoption was denied.
About 2 weeks after that happened, my roommate’s new boyfriend found a stray dog (approx. 5yo chihuahua) on the side of the road and brought it to my roommate. At first, she was ecstatic because she thought that it was a puppy because of its size, but once she found out that it wasn’t a puppy, but a full-grown dog she and her boyfriend (who so eloquently termed the dog “damaged goods” because she wasn’t a puppy) decided that it would be best to take her to the humane society so that my rommmate could save her money to get a puppy instead (the dog stayed in my room that night bc my roommate couldn’t BEAR to keep her bc she was SOO sad). I thought that after this TRAUMATIC event she surely wouldn’t want to adopt a dog because I definately didn’t want one after that night….
The next morning, they took her to the humane society and apparently the humane society wouldn’t take her bc they didn’t know her background, and my roommate would have had to get her vaccinated (which costs money that she didn’t want to spend on the “damaged goods”) so they took her to animal control and left her there instead since its free.
Hours later (while I was at work) I got a text from her saying that she had adopted an eight month old collie mix puppy from the humane society. When I asked her how that was possible, she said that they had put the dog under her bf’s name since he had a yard and his landlord didn’t care (her bf has since moved out of this house and into an apartment similar to ours without a fenced in backyard). She didn’t ask me before she adopted the dog and honestly I thought that after what had happened with the chihuahua she wouldn’t want to adopt a dog.
Anyways, I have been really helping her with the dog mostly because I feel bad about how long he stays in his crate during the day (I used to take him out, try to train him, and play with him), but as school has gotten more and more demanding I have been able to take him out less and less. He usually stays in his crate on weekdays from about 10am until about 2 or 3pm then she takes him out to the bathroom, goes and lays down on her bed and lets him run around the house (doesn’t play with him) until about 4 or 5pm then either goes to her night class, or work from 5pm until 9 or 10pm. He does not sleep in his crate at night unless she stays at her bf’s house in which case she takes him out around 10 or 10:30pm and then doesn’t come back home to let him out until around 10:30 or 11am the next morning. On the weekends, she will let him out anytime from 10 to 12pm (or whenever she gets up) and then go to work at either 11 or 1 and get off work and come home around 10:30pm.
He is a good dog and doesn’t ever pee or poop in his crate (to my knowledge) but I feel really bad for him bc the longer that she and her bf are together, the less time she spends with the dog (one time I got home and took him out of the crate bc I knew that he had been in there a long time, and before I could get the leash on him, he started peeing on the rug by the door…his legs were shaking so I knew that he couldn’t hold it). Like I said, I have tried to train him, but my roommate basically un-does whetever I do and insists that since he is a puppy he “can’t (and or shouldn’t) be trained”….so instead when he does something bad she or her bf hits him (I refused to hit him, and they basically laughed at me). He is also really anxious and playfully nips and jumps on our guests a lot, and when he gets to spend time out of the crate he runs around frantically and whines.
I feel really bad for the dog, but since he is not forced to stay outside, has food and water, and shows no signs of physical abuse, I feel trapped. I don’t think that she is a suitable guardian for him, and I expressed my feelings about her leaving him in his crate all day to her several days ago (nothing has really changed).
We are already having problems bc her boyfriend has been overstepping his boundaries in our apartment lately and I confronted her about that about a week ago as well (it has gotten a little bit better) but there is A LOT of tension between us bc of it.
Should I tell her that I think she should take the dog back? Should I tell my landlady that she has been keeping the dog even though it is a MISDEMEANOR? Should I call the Humane Society and tell them what is going on?
(The reason this has gone on for so long is bc I thought that
I know that this is a long post, but if you are going to comment on it please read it all the way through. Thanks

You sure do have a lot to say about this dog, do you take anything else as seriously?

Bring it to the vet, it may have a chip so it can be returned to it’s owner.
